Bristol "Blenheim" - Hawker
"Hind"
Looking back...remembering a few moments from a dream as I shadowed aircraft created for a different world...I won't forget the "Mustang" in close formation off our right wing...the air so smooth...a Texas sunset cutting a bolt of light to the spinner... A tribute to brilliance, only one of John Northrop's "Wings" flies today. It followed us for a moment over a lake in southern California...Unforgettable...There is only one flyable "Oscar", the Nakajima Ki-43. It is hidden in the shadow of a glacial mountain in New Zealand. Its flight was a secret...I saw it. The only airworthy Bristol "Blenheim" whispered past us near Duxford, not far from London...lean...graceful...The only flying example, a Hawker "Hind", like a "Hurricane" with two wings, flew with is over English wheat fields as we departed Shuttleworth... There was an unforgettable moment over the cliffs of Dover with the Royal Navy's "Firefly". We had flown across England, over the Thames to meet at the edge of the Channel... Endangered species...a Russian Yakovlev wandering the steppes...a "Corsair" cruising the Gulf with an "Avenger" stuck tight to its tail...a PBJ banking over the Houston ship channel. A "Spitfire" with six victories pulls a hard right over Audley End...a "Hellcat" and a "Bearcat" fly formation with the moon... Remember them. They have changed our lives. They have changed our dreams. ***
